Summary
The Wacker Neuson RTLx-SC3 is a diesel-powered, infrared remote-controlled articulated trench roller with padfoot drums for soil compaction in trenches, sub-base, and foundation applications. It covers one subtask within the earthmoving job: compaction of backfill and sub-base material using dual-force vibratory drums controllable at distances up to line-of-sight via a handheld IR remote with 16-channel transmission. The RTLx-SC3 has shipped since 2019 and is available through United Rentals, Sunbelt Rentals, Home Depot Rental, and Cat Rental Store; the RTD-SC4 successor launched in 2025 with radio-plus-IR dual remote control.
How it works on your site
Compaction
The operator runs the roller from outside the trench using a handheld infrared remote while maintaining line-of-sight to one of three IR receiving eyes, including a patented top-mounted receiver designed for deep-trench visibility. Articulated padfoot drums deliver compaction at two force levels (15,400 lbf and 7,700 lbf) with the exciter positioned below the axle centerline. The Compatec system provides real-time LED feedback on compaction degree, and drum extensions can be removed to narrow the working width from 32 in to 22 in for tighter trenches.
