How it works on your site
The Volvo CE CX01 is a cab-less asphalt compactor concept from Volvo CE's Concept Lab: a single drum ("unidrum") split into two halves, kept upright by a self-balancing control system and driven by a diesel generator that charges ultracapacitors. It covers asphalt compaction, alone or in a rolling train; Volvo describes remote control and autonomous fleet operation as the design intent, and no source documents an autonomous run. Volvo CE unveiled it at The Utility Expo 2021 and showed an evolved version at Volvo Days 2024; its own blog calls the CX01 a one-off exploration "not practical in its current form", the Concept Lab page lists it at concept stage, and no sale, pilot or job-site use is on record.
Compaction (Rolling Train)
Volvo describes several CX01 units teaming up on one paving job, linked in a site communication network and coordinating material delivery with the trucks and the asphalt plant. In that design the units survey the mat for density, temperature and passes, then decide when and where to compact, running autonomously or under remote control. Volvo calls the CX01 purely an exploration, not practical in its current form.
